Ryan Kuwabara

Ryan Kuwabara grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. He played AAA from 9 years old to 15 for the Hamilton Huskies, after which he went to play for the Hamilton Kilty B’s Jr.B club. Ryan was then drafted 7th overall in the 1989 OHL Entry Draft to the Ottawa 67’s. In his first year 1989-90 he won the Bobby Smith Scholastic Player of the Year for the OHL. He scored 30 goals or more in each of his three seasons with the 67’s, amassing 43 goals and 100 points in his final year.
After his first season with the Ottawa 67’s Ryan was selected in the 2nd Round, 39th Overall by the Montreal Canadiens. He played 2 seasons with the Canadiens AHL team the Fredericton Canadiens.
He then decided to take an offer to play in Japan for the Kokudo Bunnies, where he helped them win five championships. He then acquired his Japanese citizenship and represented Japan in the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. His game worn Japan jersey is now part of the international section of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Ryan then played in 4 IIHF Men’s “A” Division World Championships as Captain and Assistant Captain.
After nine seasons in Japan, he went to Northern Ireland to play for the Belfast Giants in the British Superleague and won the league championship. He then returned to Japan to play for the Nippon Paper Cranes in the newly formed Asian League which had teams from Japan, Korea, China and Russia. He helped to lead the Cranes to the finals in each of his five seasons there and won the championship once. The following year he was a player/coach with High 1 in South Korea where he led the team in scoring.
Retiring in 2009, he began coaching at the AAA level with the Minor Midget Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs which made it to the 2010 OMHA Finals and the 2010 OHL Cup. He is now Associate Coach of the Georgetown Raiders Tier II Jr.A Team and is coaching at the Under 16 evaluation camp in Oshawa.
